Cruisers of California’s coast know the many pleasures of Monterey and environs: Fisherman’s Wharf, famed Cannery Row, the Monterey Aquarium, and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
But every September, all that takes a back seat to the Monterey Jazz Festival. Over its long history, the festival has boasted a veritable who’s who of jazz legends: Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington among others. This year’s lineup doesn’t disappoint, with Tony Bennett, Robert Randolph & the Family Band, and Esperanza Spalding taking the stage. So take a look at your calendar—this year’s show runs September 21 to 23—call ahead for some dock space, and head over to Monterey (36°36’N 121°54’W) for great music and good times.
