Best known as the company that built one of the first hybrid propulsion systems for boats, Steyr Motors also makes marine diesel engines. This January, the Austrian company went into production with its six-cylinder SE series. It’s based on Steyr’s reinforced Monoblock design, which has redesigned intake channels and upgraded high-pressure fuel injection. This gives the engine up to 30-percent better efficiency compared to older models. Steyr also made significant improvements in the SE series’ cooling system including a thermostat-controlled oil cooler and redesigned exhaust manifold and heat exchanger. The result is reduced oil consumption, shorter warm-up times and almost nonexistent smoke at startup.
