Viking 37 Billfish

New Boats Notebook

“A big center console boat is a saltwater washing machine, I know, I fish on one,” says Viking communications director Peter Frederiksen. “That’s a tough sell to a young family with children.” Looking to challenge the growing (in LOA and popularity) center console market is the Viking 37 Billfish.

You may recall that the Billfish 37 was a popular model (27 were sold) for Ocean Yachts starting in 2008; what you may not know is that with Viking’s acquisition of Ocean Yachts a few months ago, it now has the rights, and the Ocean employees, to breathe new life into the once-feared-deceased model.

Simple, yet far from Spartan, the 37 will have an upper and lower helm, a saloon with seating for eight, an amidships galley, a head with an enclosed shower, and a master forward that could be home to a full or scissor berth. As for where guests will likely spend most of their time, the cockpit is an 86-square-foot, fish-fighting arena surrounded by a bait freezer, fish boxes, and a transom livewell.

Equipped with twin 550-horsepower Cummins QSB 6.7s, the 37 should cruise at 30 knots and top out at 35.

Viking is aiming the 37 at stealing the entry-level boater away from the more weather-dependent center-consoler. “The 37 is going to get people out on the water more often,” Frederiksen says. “And that’s not only good for us, that’s good for the industry.”

The phoenix will rise from the ashes at Viking’s VIP show in Riviera Beach in February 2017 and at Yachts Miami Beach after that.
