I recently visited the Tiara Yachts factory on the gusty shores of Lake Michigan. The folks at the Holland, Michigan, site were gracious and insightful, and they were particularly excited about their latest boat, the Tiara 50 Coupe, which debuted to the press in September and will be making the rounds at U.S. shows this fall and winter. The boat will be notable for her sleek design and concentration on livable onboard space. Those attributes will be highlighted by a spacious saloon and bridgedeck area complemented by panoramic windows. She’ll also be one of the first boats to be available with Volvo Penta IPS950 drives, which Tiara expects to be very popular. That optional propulsion system is a twin installation with each engine having 725 metric horsepower and Volvo claims they have an excellent power-to-weight ratio, enhanced torque and fuel efficiency, and also the ability to run more cleanly than past iterations, such as the IPS900.
Another notable feature on the 50 will be her “Glass Cockpit.” (Think “cockpit” like on a fighter jet, not “cockpit” like on a boat.) Tiara’s development design manager Andrew Bartlett described it to me as such: “The Glass Cockpit is a package developed by Volvo, partnered with Garmin, that comes from aeronautics. It’s an integrated functionality that ties into the boat’s systems as well as the Garmin electronics and the engine. It’s much more integrated than in the past. We’ve got Garmin and Volvo cooperating to get the essence of the electronics into the systems. One byproduct of that is an updated joystick system. It’s not only used for slow-speed maneuvering, but now we can use it at cruise speeds, so you have an alternative for using the steering wheel. We’ve positioned the joystick ergonomically so you can steer the boat from a very comfortable position. It’s similar to what’s seen on jet planes. Plus, it’s all glass, there’s no buttons, just touchscreens. When we were thinking this up, I took my iPhone out of my pocket and said to my design team, ‘I want that.’ And that’s what we got.”
It’s advancements like the Glass Cockpit that are making the Tiara 50 Coupe such a hotly anticipated boat among Tiara insiders. So be on the lookout this fall for this beauty from the Wolverine State. She’s got a whole lot to like.
