New Boats Notebook

We tracked down the inside scoop on what boatbuilders are up to next.

Slane 62

Slane is a legendary name in Carolina boatbuilding, and with good reason. (The late Willis Slanefounded Hatteras Yachts.) Since 1984 Slane Marine has been restoring and repairing older boats for other people, but recently it has decided to start building its own vessels. Right now it has an IPS-powered, 62 sportfish on its boards that owner Tom Slane says will burn 59 gph at 30 knots, thanks in part to an uncompromising emphasis on weight consciousness. Slane also mentioned as an asset the spacious accommodations level, which is thanks in part to the choice of Volvo Penta IPS power. “This boat’s got a lot of plusses, and it creates a nice little niche for us,” he says. “Right now we’re tooling the hull molds and we’ll start laying her up soon. We’re doing our best to have the boat debut down in Miami, it’s ambitious but we’re gonna try.”

I like the way the man thinks.
