Caprio’s First impression: Pure entertainment—this 44-foot speedster makes no pretense to be anything other than fun, and it does so in great style. It’s a Ferrari FF for the wet set. Don’t give the keys to a marina’s valet.
Revolver Boats says that the 44GT transfers the qualities of a grand touring car to the sea. Nothing more than a cursory examination of the yacht confirms the company’s claim.
If you guessed that the 44GT is an Italian boat, you’d be correct. Alberto Mancini of AM Yacht Design drew the exterior. Michael Peters of the eponymous design firm did the naval architecture and general arrangement plan. Peters built his business and fine reputation designing offshore racing boats, and his magical touch with deep-V hulls continues to this day. [See Michael Peters’s columns here.]
Although the styling and underlying concept of a grand tourer for the sea will sell these boats, the shape of the hull and the yacht’s light weight and stiff construction may be more important. Everyone knows that excessive weight is the enemy of speed and fuel economy, and Revolver Boats has kept the avoirdupois to a minimum. Displacement is only 18,500 pounds, achieved via the use of vacuum bagging a laminate of E-glass over Corecell foam set in vinylester resin. Multi-axial and unidirectional carbon fiber in strategic locations stiffens the structure, which reduces (or eliminates) speed-robbing distortion and eventual structural damage at the bulkheads.
As you’d expect of a fine GT, the superstructure is carbon fiber, and it has a large, electrically operated glass sunroof. The afterdeck is a massive sunpad.
A narrow passageway on each side of the helm console leads down to the accommodations area, where you’ll find a private head with a shower, V-berth, and a small galley. The standard 5-kW generator powers the air conditioner, so I can imagine a loving couple spending a night or two aboard. What an adventure!
