In my experience, the type of boater that progresses to a point where he is building large, custom fishing boats for himself is generally a hard-charging guy. I’ve also noticed that boats tend to match the personalities of their owners, especially when they’re custom. And from the looks of the new Paul Mann 67 Lisa K—with her looming tower, aggressive Carolina flare, and classically sporty yet also substantial lines—this boat is most likely very much in line with that observation. We caught up with company president and CEO Paul Mann to talk about his latest creation.
Power & Motoryacht: What will make this boat stand out against her competition? What’s the one thing that really makes her different?
Paul Mann: Besides being fully custom? She’s got an absolutely beautiful cherry interior with raised panel doors. People are gonna like that.
Power & Motoryacht: Sounds great. How about from a systems perspective, anything new onboard?
Paul Mann: Oh, mechanical-wise the boat’s superior, because it’s got the second pair in existence of the [Caterpillar] C32 1925 ACERTs that are Tier III. The emissions on those engines will be compliant for the next 15 years whereas the Tier II engines will only be compliant through the end of this year. The Tier III is a prototype—it’s not out yet besides here—and it’s got zero smoke. We cannot make the things smoke. Also with the Tier III’s we’ve got the first Cat 360 system, a joystick maneuvering system, and it’s coupled with the Twin Disc gears and conventional drive. So with that and a bow thruster it’s as maneuverable as a pod, but with conventional drives. The engines are so advanced that this boat is Caterpillar’s demo boat at the next three boat shows.
Power & Motoryacht: Nice, and when boat show season is over where will this boat live?
Paul Mann: She’s going to be up and down the East Coast. She’ll also spend a lot of time in the Bahamas. The owner plans on fishing in the Bahamas Billfish Championship. It should be exciting.
