Caprio’s First impression: This new yacht has one of the most interesting profiles I’ve seen in some time. It’s a bit busy, but the elements harmoniously interact and reflect current trends toward edginess in yacht and automotive design. Will she attract an admiring public? Certainly in enough numbers to succeed.
Turkish builder Numarine introduced its new 70HT this spring. She’s an updated version of the 68HT and shares a lot of the styling cues and performance characteristics of her larger sister, the 78HT.
Folks who buy a 70HT ought to prepare themselves for the attention their yacht will attract. Although she looks fairly conventional from the bow and stern, her profile may stop other yachtsmen dead in their wakes. The rubrail defines the yacht’s basic element—the reverse sheer that has been a major element of sport-boat design at least since the third quarter of the 20th century. Her highly crowned foredeck is part of the basic concept, but most important, it gives the forward staterooms a luxurious amount of headroom.
I suspect that building the 70HT would have been easier if the deck mold had simply followed the line of the rub rail, but who cares? A person who spends a million or more dollars for a yacht typically doesn’t want to follow the crowd. In a search for a distinctive form, Numarine’s designers have drawn shapely, and very high, bulwarks to enclose the side decks. From the rise of the superstructure to the swim platform, Numarine’s design team has successfully experimented with a trio of dramatic cues. Look at the portlights. Do you see a handful of seductive eyes gazing back at you?
