Magnum 51 Besti

Koenig’s First impression:
The Bestia’s got unmistakable aesthetics. Makes me want to throw on a pastel-pink leisure suit, flip on some Phil Collins, and blast her around Biscayne Bay—in a good way.

Even though this new Magnum 51, which debuted at the 2014 Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show, was hiding deep within a jungle of high bulwarks and taut biminis on one of the show’s outlying docks, she was still nearly impossible to miss. She’s simply too brash for that.

This boat flat out sneers at observers. She knows what she is, and she knows why you’re watching. A sea-blue exterior neatly cries out for attention, while stiletto-sharp lines announce what this boat was born to do. Namely, go fast, very fast. Twin 1,600-horsepower MTU M94s make sure of that, rocketing her through the waters of say, Biscayne Bay, at upwards of 61 knots, or as her captain told me when I was onboard, “Seventy miles per hour, us sport-boat guys, we always use miles per hour. It just sounds better.” Bestia, as you may have guessed, means beast in Italian—it’s an apt name if there ever was one.

A workably large cabin down below can accommodate two on a forepeak queen-sized berth, and a head to port is a nice addition, but this boat wasn’t really meant for hanging out indoors while aboard. Duh. You’re supposed to be out in the sunshine. To that end there’s a large sunpad on the after end of the main deck, not to mention an oversized tubular-aluminum swim platform that serves a threefold purpose: it can fit as many people as you want, it looks badass, and it provides protection from the sharp props that work so well with the Bestia’s Arneson surface drives.

There truly is no way to hide a boat like this. Not that you’d ever really want to try.
