Dan’s Take: That’s not a Jarrett Bay. No, it can’t be, you can tell by the dark hull and rigging. Jarrett Bays are bright and colorful. Right?

Plenty of Carolina flare: Check. A large, spacious cockpit in which to battle big fish: Check. A powerful propulsion package to get you to the bite in a hurry: Also check. Despite possessing quintessentially Jarrett Bay characteristics, the builder’s 61st custom hull, a 46-foot walk-around, looks, well, different (read: bad ass!).

Sporting a metallic Steel Gray hull and Stardust Silver superstructure and deck from Alexseal, along with jet-black powder-coating, this boat would definitely play the role of villain in an old western. Built for the owners of Grander Custom Tackle Company, the intimidating, militaristic look was intentional.

“The color scheme was chosen to be eye-catching and powerful. It’s intended to go against the norm, with a shock factor that stands out among the crowd of professional fishing boats,” says one of the owners, who named the boat, appropriately, Grander. “The overall quality and finishes of their work is a step above the rest of the industry, and they have exceeded our expectations.”

Once you get past the dramatic color scheme, your eye is pulled to the bow of the boat, where you find built-in bucket chairs, drink and phone holders, live wells, pop-up cleats, and rod holders. I have a feeling this is going to be a popular spot for the Grander team to kick back and test their newest lures.

Belowdecks, through a sliding door, is a modern-looking, fisherman-friendly cabin, complete with V-berth, tons of well-organized rod and tackle stowage, and an intelligently designed galley.

Backing up Grander’s mean demeanor is a pair of 1,136-horsepower Caterpillar C18s, which provide a top end of 45 knots.
