Koenig’s First Take:
Like pretty much everyone else I spoke to at the Miami boat show, I couldn’t believe this 27 is made from fiberglass. Her wooden sisters have nothing on her from an aesthetic angle, and of course, this one’s much easier to take care of. Pretty and low-maintenance? Sign me up for that.
I got to the (2015) Miami boat show late this year due to a host of maladies, distractions, and catastrophes of varying degrees. But as soon as I did make it to the docks, I started to hear the rumors flying. Did you see the Hacker? You should really go check out that Hacker. Hacker, Hacker, Hacker. The whisperings and proddings got me wondering what it was I was missing. Because for all of the enthusiasm for boats you read in these pages, it is occasionally easy for professionals in the marine industry to become inured to their insanely luxe surroundings. You sometimes find yourself using the shade from a 150-foot yacht to better see your iPhone screen, so you can squeak out that perfect 140-character tweet—without paying no nevermind to the $40 million vessel next to you.
All of which is to say, this Hacker was certainly earning her keep. For good reason. The 27 is the first fiberglass launch from the iconic American builder, a development that came about because of customer demand. All that mahogany and teak does come with a (maintenance) price after all. And you really have to look closely at the 27 to tell that she’s not wood herself, the attention to detail is that intense.
The boat in Miami was 27 feet long with a slender 7-foot 3-inch beam, and a very manageable 2-foot 4-inch draft that should make her perfect for negotiating skinny water or joining friends at a favorite sandbar hangout. A four-speaker stereo system and underwater LED lighting help to raise the fun quotient. And that’s really the point on a small cocktail cruiser like this. Well, having fun, and making sure everyone’s talking about you too, of course.
