Garcia 54

It’s not that often that you look at a trawler-type yacht and think to yourself wow, that thing is really modern looking. But that’s exactly the impression you get from the new Garcia 54, which debuted stateside at last year’s Ft. Lauderdale show after making the journey across from France on her own bottom. Her lines are contemporarily styled and complemented by a dark visor of windows that feels more akin to a snarling battlewagon than a comfortable cruiser. But then again this isn’t your average cruiser. Case in point, she’s constructed using aluminum, which makes her both lighter and stronger than your typical fiberglass boat.

She’s also equipped with all manner of design elements and onboard amenities that you’d want for a long voyage. Extra-wide side decks and an open bow with sturdy rails make her safe for handling in rough seas and relatively easy to dock. Meanwhile her saloon features a U-shaped dining settee across from a large flatscreen if you feel like vegging out. An open galley forward of that will be a boon to any burgeoning chefs onboard.

Forward of the galley and up a few steps is the indoor, single-seat helm. Any captain will appreciate the addition of the powerful Hepworth wipers there that help keep his line of sight clear, (not to mention the Volvo Penta “get-home” engine that accompanies the single, 185-horsepower CAT). Both features are evidence that this boat is made for serious cruising—and not just on sunny days when the water is glass.

Up top there’s an expansive bridge deck with room enough for a RIB aft and a few sunpads scattered about. Oh yeah, there’s also a mast with a sail. It’s for lateral stability no doubt. Also, it looks salty as all get-out. It’s a nice touch that keeps this boat from looking too space-age, and just about right for the here and now.
