Bavaria Motorboats is a German builder with plenty of industry cred, though you could be forgiven if you’ve never heard of them. That’s because historically they’ve only sold their seakindly builds with forward-thinking design in Europe. Until now. The Bavaria Virtess 420 debuted at last year’s Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show where she attracted lots of attention from journalists and show-goers alike.

Frankly, that’s not surprising considering the boat’s impressive and somewhat unorthodox pedigree. As Blane Aarup of Bavaria Motorboats North America explained it, “Though German-built, the boat is actually an Italian design, so we’ve got Italians for style and Germans for engineering. That’s a tough combination to beat. The boat actually won the award for best motorboat under 49 feet at 2013’s Düsseldorf show.”

Part of the 420’s appeal comes from her onboard use of space, which Aarup says makes her feel more like a 46-foot boat than the 40-footer that she is (sans swim platform). One area where that space manifests itself is the bridgedeck, where there’s seating for eight, a grill, a sink, and of course a helm.

Down in the cockpit the boat has rearrangable furniture that moves along shallow tracks, a design trait that seems to be part of a growing trend, particularly among European builders. Aft of that, a remote-controlled swim platform can handle up to 1,300 pounds.

The boat is currently kitted out with twin 435-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS600s and Aarup says they get her on plane quickly and make her admirably maneuverable. Not only that, the company says the Virtess can hit a rollicking 42 knots at WOT and cruises comfortably at 24 knots, burning just 20 gallons per hour.

It sounds to me like this boat has a lot going for it. I’m looking forward to crawling all over her at the Miami show. Maybe I’ll see you there?
