· 1997 The largest yacht built in Japan, five decks high, gets
her name from a Taiwan-based shipping company. Both are owned by Yung-fa
Chang. Since the yacht spends much of her time in Asian waters, where
the summer sun and temperatures can be intense, she emphasizes enclosed
spaces within her five decks, including a karaoke saloon, 20 staterooms,
and a conference room. However, if the weather cooperates, more than 200
people can attend cocktail parties or dinners at tables set up on the

· 2000 The family that plays together, stays together: Tatoosh
rang in the new year in St. Bart's alongside Le Grand Bleu
(see no. 5), which was fitting, since their owners are brothers. The yacht
remained in the Caribbean, including Antigua, for much of the winter.
She's named for an island in the Pacific Northwest that marks the
entrance to the Straits of Juan de Fuca. Her owner prefers staying out
of the limelight, despite being one of the biggest names in wireless technology;
in fact, he's told reporters he'd rather spend time on his
yacht. Hopefully his various business interests, which include overseeing
a sailing team in competition for the next America's Cup, won't

Nahlin

· 1930 What a history! Built 71 years ago for Lady Yule, one
of England's wealthiest citizens who is notable for establishing
the Hanstead Stud horse, Nahlin cruised more than 200,000 miles in her
first four years. Chartered by Edward VIII in 1936 for his now-famous
Adriatic cruise with Wallis Simpson, the yacht sold the following year
to King Carol of Romania and was rechristened Lucearful. But when the
king abdicated the throne in 1940, the yacht's fortunes gradually
declined. When she was rediscovered on the Danube in 1989, named Libertatea,
she was in a very bad state. Thankfully seven years later one of the principals
of the yacht-management firm Edmiston & Company set the wheels in
motion to acquire her, reportedly on behalf of a British client, finally
getting permission from Romanian authorities to bring her to England for
restoration about two years ago. Conflicting reports have placed the yacht
at DML shipyard as well as Cammell Laird, with yet another report stating

Asean Lady

· 2001 While she was originally slated to launch last year,
Asean Lady actually debuts on the world stage this year because
work was diverted to other, mostly commercial, projects at the yard. But
that's okay, since Asean Lady's owner, Brian Chang,
also owns the yard. Asean Lady is a motoryacht version of a proa,
which is an outrigger canoe used for centuries in the South Pacific. Because
the proa hull form is so efficient, the yacht can reportedly cruise at
15 knots on just one engine driving a steerable, retractable stern thruster.
Chang is an experienced yachtsman whose previous yacht was a traditional-looking

· 1969/1995 Kerry Packer, the Australian media and casino baron
who's also his country's richest man, takes this converted
ice-class tug on world excursions. The $3-billion-man underwent a kidney
transplant last fall and wound up back in the hospital for an undisclosed
reason this May; perhaps a recuperation cruise is just what the doctor

Benetti from Donald Trump's creditors more than a decade ago. He
took Kingdom 5KR to Puerto Rico earlier this year, although no
one reported seeing him or anyone else depart the yacht during her stay.
A billionaire several times over, he is one of the world's most
influential investors, owning more than a billion shares of America Online
and is bullish about eBay and Amazon.com as well. If he built his yacht

scientific research voyages, hosting oceanographers whose directive was
