Weather or Not

Get what you pay for with the Garmin GDL 40 weather receiver. The unit is NMEA 2000 for easy plug-and-play installation and receives a feed of weather data from a cellular network. That means two things for those using the company’s compatible GPSMAP systems: The weather data is updated only within range of the cell network (read: most recreational boaters), and it’s an inexpensive alternative to satellite feeds. Garmin’s pricing structure allows the user to buy service only when it’s needed—$4.99 per 24-hour period charged to a credit card linked to a myGarmin account. The data comes from a Garmin subsidiary called Digital Cyclone and is transmitted over AT&T’s cellular network with a GSM signal. The GDL 40 has an MSRP of $300.
