Desolation Sound

Six Great Summer CruisesDesolation Sound

Don Campbell, San Juan Yachts

“When we go cruising—and this is pretty much unanimous for experienced boaters in the Pacific Northwest—we make our migration up through Canada in search of warm water. It’s a unique phenomenon: When you get farther north into

Desolation Sound not only do you have very few other boats to stare at or fight with for an anchorage, you get water that kisses the low 80s. We’ll try to get up there with one overnight, and then really just kind of idle around from anchorage to anchorage. Sometimes the boat just sits in a beautiful bay with nice warm water and a clamming beach around the corner. And then you’ll jump in your skiff and pick up your next supply of beer and sodas and whatever fresh vegetables or fruit you can buy. There aren’t a lot of stores—there are very few marinas, just a handful. When you go into any of these little stores if you see anything good you just buy it because it might not be there tomorrow.”
