Photo by Art Harrigan on the 70-foot Krogen-designed Ranger “Every year since 2003 [my wife] Carol and I have voyaged from Seattle to the fjords around Bella Bella, British Columbia, including stops at Kimsquit at the head of Dean Channel (where, contrary to the information in all the guidebooks, it is not impossible to anchor), Kynoch Inlet, Roscoe Inlet, and out to Aristazabel Island,” writes reader Art Harrigan. “Ranger is a 70-foot, 75-ton fiberglass displacement boat, a one-off design by Krogen built at Little Harbor Boatworks in Florida in 1985. Power is two Cat 3306s. We acquired the boat in 2002. The boat voyaged on her own bottom to Tampa, then to Seattle via the Panama Canal (we hired a captain for this trip). Carol and I own the boat equally with our next-door neighbors, Jim and Burnley Snyder. We handle the boat ourselves—no crew—and average around 1,200 miles a year. On this particular trip, the Snyders joined us for the early stage. We traveled together from Campbell River, traversing Johnstone Strait in mid-August, and stopped that first day at Mamalilaculla where this photo was taken. Mamalilaculla is an ancient First Nation village. The area around it, including Goat Island where we were anchored, is a collection of small islands on the south side of Knight Inlet a short distance from the beginning of the inlet at Blackfish Sound. The islands are very sheltered and stunningly beautiful.”
