One Month Until The Brett T. Bailey Mako Rodeo

Mako sharkWe’re just one month away from one of my favorite days of the year, The Brett T. Bailey Mako Rodeo out of Hoffman’s Marina in Brielle, New Jersey. The event, which is held in memory of Brett Bailey, who was 28 when he died at the World Trade Center on 9/11, raises money for the families of New Jersey National Guard members, among other charities.

And it’s a whole lot of fun.

With the water off New Jersey still cold in mid-June, there are lots of big fish out there, and big sharks looking to eat them. I’ve fished the tournament on Capt. Art DellaSalla’s boat Andiamo for the last few years and we’ve never not had a ton of action. Every year it seems like we steam into port thinking this might be our year, only to see some other crew hoisting a massive shark on the scales that dwarfs our catch.

No biggie, it’s still a great day out on the water and for a great cause. And if you want to bring the wife and kids, the tournament has a unique family feel to it, including a bouncy castle and face painter to keep the little guys busy while they’re waiting for daddy.

To enter the tournament, head to, and to learn more about the effects, both positive and negative, Brett’s death has had, check out Power & Motoryacht’s story “Mountains to the Sea” or the The New York Times’ short documentary on the tournament.
