After introducing the Cat C6.4 in 2011, the manufacturer planned to have the V-8 diesel in production early this year. The engine is rated at 3400 rpm with power output ranging from 335 mhp to 505 mph. It displaces 6.4 liters (390 CID) and has a bore and stroke of 3.87 inches (98.2 mm) and 4.13 inches (105 mm), respectively. The Tier III-compliant engine features high-pressure common-rail injection and provides quieter engine noise thanks to pilot injection of fuel and Piezo technology to eliminate electro-mechanical control solenoids. Caterpillar also achieved quieter sound output through a two-piece CGI cylinder block combining the bedplate and block casting to provide additional lower operating noise.
