Hydrogen: It's the fuel of the future. It reduces pollution when used in conventional internal combustion engines or hybrids, and it virtually eliminates pollution when used in conjunction with PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) fuel-cell technology. The diagram to the left illustrates how it works. Water is drawn from an outside source and is purified, then an onboard electrolysis unit produces hydrogen and oxygen from the water. The hydrogen is stored in onboard tanks for use by any suitable powerplant, from fuel cells to internal combustion engines.
