Preparing a menu for people with different tastes and preferences can be daunting. That's why many chefs send out questionnaires before the cruise takes place. It allows them to make sure that all guests will be satisfied.

Sending out a questionnaire is an easy way of finding out if any of your guests are on a special diet, have strong likes/dislikes, or if they prefer a certain beverage. It's also a way for you to find out if they have any food allergies.

Last summer I took a cruise on the Chesapeake Bay aboard Tireless (PMY, October 2002). Dale Fetterolf, our hostess, normally prepares a wide variety of local fare (crabcakes, oysters, etc.). Fortunately she sent out a "Preference Questionnaire" prior to our trip and learned that I am severely allergic to seafood. What a disaster my cruise would have been had it not been for her preparedness.--Eileen Mansfield
