Volvo Penta leads the gasoline pack with six new additions to its gasoline stern drive and inboard engines. These include the six-cylinder 4.3 GXi (225 hp), eight-cylinder 5.0 GXi (270 hp), 5.7 GL (260 hp), 5.7 Gi (280 hp), 5.7 GXi (320 hp), and 8.1Gxi (420 hp). These engines represent anywhere from a 5- to 20-hp increase over their predecessors.
All the aforementioned models are offered with the single-propeller SX or dual counterotating propeller Duoprop. The 5.7 Gi and GXi are also offered as straight inboards. The 8.1 GXi is available with the Duoprop or as a straight inboard.
All models come with high-temperature alarms and a freshwater flushing system to combat corrosion and ensure longer engine life. In addition, all GXi and Gi engines feature electronic fuel injection that is controlled by an electronic control module (ECM) designed to provide smooth acceleration, improved idling, and fewer emissions than non-EFI engines. The ECM can also compensate for low-octane fuel and prevent potentially dangerous engine knock.
The EFI engines in this series (the 5.7 GL is the only new Volvo Penta in the SX series that is not EFI) sport standard remote oil filters and use synthetic oil and platinum-tipped spark plugs to keep them in top running order. Other enhancements include an overspeed prevention feature and low- and high-pressure fuel pumps. To maximize accessibility, Volvo Penta has located the seawater pump on the front the crankshaft. In the looks-matter-too department, all these engines have sleek rain hats and are painted red instead of black.
