If
you're obsessed by low weight, you'll want to check out
the Steyr line of diesels from Austria. For example, the most powerful
model, the 3.2-liter 236 in-line six, is rated at 236 hp yet weighs
just 671 pounds without gear. That works out to 2.84 lbs/hp, a figure
many gasoline engines wish they could claim.
Steyr engines are truly unique. Their block and cylinder head are cast as a single unit, and there's liberal use of aluminum in places like the valve cover, side walls, and two-piece oil pan to save weight. Moreover, the turbocharger uses variable-pitch vanes, and the governor is electronic. Lauderdale Diesel (800) 687-7499. Fax: (954) 525-0771. www.laudiesel.com.
