This
is a little complicated, so pay attention. Sabre purchases and marinizes
engines built by Perkins, which makes a line of marine diesels from
67 to 300 hp. A couple of years ago, Caterpillar purchased Perkins,
and last April it announced it had also purchased Sabre to give it a
selection of engines rated less than 300 hp. Just as we were going to
press, Caterpillar announced the first new product to come out of these
acquisitions. It's called the 3056, and it's a Perkins-based
six-liter in-line six with ratings of 125 hp as a naturally aspirated
engine and 185 or 205 hp in turbocharged and aftercooled form. Weighing
1,342 pounds in the latter two ratings, this engine is clearly just
a first step in rounding out the bottom end of the Caterpillar lineup.
Although the existing Perkins-Sabre line, which includes the same block
rated at 135, 225, 265, and 300 hp, will continue to be sold by Perkins-Sabre
dealers, the 3056 will be sold as a Caterpillar by Caterpillar distributors
and serviced by them. It will even be painted the familiar Caterpillar
yellow.
