This German builder has been on something of a tear lately, increasing the ratings of its engines across the board. But you haven't seen anything yet. We've learned that it is about to introduce two new models that should get a lot of attention. Details of both were top secret at press time, but here's what we know so far. The first is a 1,500-hp V-12 that will go head to head with Caterpillar's 3412E. An all-electronic engine, it reportedly has four turbochargers, serially connected. In other words, one feeds the other, and each comes on line as needed. This reportedly will be the first pleasureboat engine with this configuration, which is designed to enhance both throttle response and fuel efficiency while reducing emissions. Look for this engine at next month's Miami International Boat Show.

The other engine, which we are told is more than a year away, is a 400-hp in-line six. What makes it remarkable is its three-phase injection system, similar to that used in Volkswagen automobile engines, in which fuel is injected in three sequential bursts. This eliminates much of the familiar diesel knock and results in an engine that is about as smooth as a comparable gasoline model. The new engine will also have a common-rail injection system similar to that used by Detroit Diesel and MTU in the Series 4000, which should provide excellent throttle response. This engine is reportedly about the size of a Cummins B Series.
