WHAT TO DO
Stroll along the waterfront, take in the historic sites, play a round of golf, or discover your own Beaufort. Try some of the following ideas.

• Celebrations abound in Beaufort. Plantation tours, gallery walks, Gullah (West African heritage), Water and Shrimp Festivals, and many other exciting happenings are on the calendar. Beaufort’s Chamber of Commerce (843) 524-3163 will supply all the necessary information.

• Historic points of interest include the Beaufort Museum (843) 525-7077, the John Mark Verdier House (c. 1790) (843) 524-6335, the Parris Island Museum (843) 525-2951, and the Penn Center Historic District-York W. Bailey Museum (843) 838-2432. The Port Royal Foundation (843) 524-4333 offers a walking tour of the Port Royal colony that dates back to 1672.

• Pack your golf clubs. Beaufort has many fine public courses, including Ocean Creek (843) 838-1576, Country Club (843) 522-1605, and Cotton Dike & Morgan River (843) 838-8282.

• The arts are alive here. The USCB Performing Arts Center (843) 521-4144, the Beaufort Little Theatre (843) 522-2000, Byrne Miller’s Dance Theatre (843) 524-9148, and The Shed Center for the Arts (843) 525-0968 present programs in dance, theatre, and music.

If you don’t tote your own bicycles onboard, Low Country Bicycles (843) 524-9585 will help get you out on the road.

EATERIES
The cuisine that’s offered in and around Beaufort ranges from traditional low country fare to almost anything the palate requires. Here are several suggestions.

• The Lady’s Island Country Club (843) 522-9700 is open to the public for lunch Tuesday to Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for dinner on Friday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Daily specials.

• John & Monica’s Bay Towne Grill (843) 522-3880 is a lunch spot where many locals stop and savor one of the many varieties of vegetarian and Mexican cuisines, sandwiches, and salads.

• The John Cross Tavern (843) 524-3993, (c. 1770), where many a pirate hoisted a tankard of rum, is now a historic landmark restaurant offering local seafood and steaks.

• Honored by a AAA Four Diamond award, the Beaufort Inn (843) 521-9000 serves fresh seafood and low country-style steaks, lamb, veal, and local vegetables.

• Emily’s (843) 522-1866 has an extensive tapas and entre menu and features steaks, seafood, and pasta.

• A beautiful river view makes Plums (843) 525-1946 a favorite with the locals. An eclectic menu offers variations on meats, pastas, and seafood.

• At the Whitehall Plantation (843) 521-1700, dine on low country seafood, veal, poultry, and beef while watching the sun disappear over the bay.
