Yamaha has added three new midrange, four-stroke engines for 2003 (a 2.5, 75, and 90), four high-thrust engines (a 30, 40, 60, and 65), and three four-stroke jet outboards (the 30-hp F-40, 40-hp F60m, and 65-hp F90). Its top-of-the-line four-stroke is the 225-hp F225 V-6.

All four-strokes feature tuned intake tracks to maximize air velocity, enhancing low- and midrange torque, and fuel injectors are on the inward side of each precision-tuned track, which saves space and keeps critical wiring away from the cowl latches. Yamaha's four strokes are covered by a three-year limited warranty.

This year the 250-hp 3.3L V-6 V-MAX is the top of Yamaha's direct-injection, two-cycle HPDI line, while the 250-hp 3.3L HPDI heads the two-stroke series. According to Yamaha, the V-MAX delivers fuel at 1,000 psi, which is said to provide better acceleration and top-end performance. To accomplish this the V-MAX features twin high-speed fuel pumps, as well as a peak-response induction system that provides maximum throttle response and quick acceleration. The bass boat guys are going to love this one.

The 250-hp HPDI's fuel system generates 700 psi yet still provides excellent performance. It features a front-mounted freshwater flushing system, stainless steel drive, prop and shift shafts, and use of the YDC-30 alloy, which Yamaha says is the most corrosion-resistant base material in the industry. Other notable systems include precise blend oil injection that automatically injects the right amount of oil based on load and speed, digital engine management, and the company's Sure-Seal, a tri-latch seal to ensure the cowling is tightly sealed against water and salt.
