2003 Engines Preview
Honda outboards have always been four-stroke, and the newer larger models
are based on the proven Honda automobile in-line four. This year the line
is led by the 24-valve, SOHC BF225- and BF200-hp models. Both use Honda's
VTEC system--Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control--which
utilizes two cam lobes to operate the intake valves. According to Honda,
the low-lift, short-duration cam lobes provide strong torque at low rpm.
High rpm horsepower is achieved by engaging the third rocker arm on a
high-lift cam. This not only delivers smooth power throughout the rpm
range but also results in good fuel economy. Honda has also outfitted
these engines with a variable intake system that utilizes a plenum chamber
with twin butterfly valves to control the volume and velocity of the air
that enters into the combustion chambers. The company's Engine Command
Module has 18 sensors located throughout the engine that constantly monitor
performance and can alert the operator to any damaging situation. Honda
