Is there a real difference between a Princess and a Viking Sport Cruiser (VSC), other than the obvious stuff like voltage? If you want a European yacht, why not just buy one?

Fair questions, to which VSC answers with what it calls The Viking Difference, which the company says makes its yachts uniquely tailored to American tastes and needs. This includes a list of equipment—some including specific brands—that go on every VSC yacht, things like 120/240-volt Onan gensets and wiring of 40 percent larger gauge to handle the concomitant higher amperage; brighter, more efficient Xenon DC bulbs instead of halogens; Mastervolt battery chargers; bonding to ABYC standards; refrigerators and MSDs preferred by American customers; isolation transformers; U.S. spec stereos and TVs that can be readily serviced stateside; upgraded electronics, including such brands such as Icom, Maptech, Furuno, and Simrad; backup macerator systems; Cruisair air conditioning spec’d for tropical conditions; and U.S.-sourced MAN engines.

Besides all that, VSC cites service. It owns two large East Coast service yards, has 29 retail outlets, and stocks $1 million worth of VSC parts in its New Gretna, New Jersey, facility. All VSC yachts receive two complete inspections and sea trials, one in the England and one in the United States that entails 250 checks. And every VSC owner is assigned his or her own customer-service representative. —R.T.
