I’m not normally a fan of comprehensive electronic monitoring systems, but the one that’s standard on the Hatteras 68 Convertible changed my mind. Incredibly, it lacks a flashy name. In a paroxysm of understatement, Hatteras just calls it the “computer-controlled Ethernet monitoring system” and doesn’t even capitalize it!

But what the system lacks in marketing flash it makes up for in features and ease of use. It does everything, which, to quote the brochure, includes “visual and audible signals for engines, gears, generators, high bilge water, fire warning in the engine compartment, fire extinguisher discharge in the engine compartment, A.C. power loss, smoke detectors, all tank level indication, low battery voltage, alternator failure, battery charger failure, [and] bilge-pump control and run indication.” There’s even a history log for critical alarms, and Hatteras says you can easily and economically add monitoring points to the system. In other words, this innovative system does just about everything but put a fish in the cockpit.

Better, it does it all logically. I was able to navigate the entire system with only a few minutes’ practice. And every screen is well laid out and easy to read, even in daylight. Our system used a touchscreen, but all future ones will probably use a roller ball.

Hats off to Hatteras for a real step forward. But come on, guys—something this cool needs a cool name. —R.T.
