A pea-soup fog enveloped the coast on the morning of a tournament I fished last summer. But when we got the green light to go, my radar's display looked like an ant farm, with boats scurrying all over the screen as fishermen tried to rush out the inlet. It was an exercise in defensive piloting to say the least, and if I hadn't had an effective radar onboard, my boat and crew would have been at risk from one of those yahoos flying headlong into our path.

Si-Tex's latest T-1500 series of radars are aimed to help boaters in such situations who must deal with both short-range targets as well as long-range targets. To suit variations in available space, the T-1500 Series is offered with radomes from 25 inches to open arrays that measure more than six feet. The prices vary as well, from $9,395 for the system with the 25-inch radome (36-nautical-mile range) to $14,595 for the 61⁄2-foot open-array (64-nautical-mile range) setup.

The T-1500's 15-inch LCD color TFT screen can be split to display both long-range and short-range targets, and the targets light up in different colors depending on the intensity of the signal received. If there are a number of targets you'd like to keep an eye on, the push of a button can select up to ten for tracking via the Automatic Tracking Aid (ATA). While they are being tracked, you'll get constant updates as to the targets' speed, distance, course, and bearing to your vessel. In the event a target gets too close for comfort, a collision alarm will sound. The system is also able to supply information in 15 languages including German, Spanish, Turkish, Russian, Japanese, Swedish, and Italian. But if you're reading this, then English should work fine.
