Yanmar has thrown its hat into the electronically controlled diesel engine arena with its 12-liter 6SY-STP diesel. The engine manufacturer, which is known for its high-revving, lightweight diesels, is making a bold move into the big-iron market with this 720-hp in-line six.

Yanmar's electronic management system is said to monitor rpm, turbocharger boost, engine coolant temperature, and throttle settings data; process it via a powerful computer; and adjust injector timing and fuel flow accordingly. The result should be more efficient combustion and enhanced fuel efficiency. Yanmar says that by using Communications Area Network (CAN) protocol, the engine can also be integrated with other onboard monitoring systems. This technology should start appearing in the rest of the manufacturer's line in the not-too-distant future, says Tom Weslager, a spokesman for Yanmar.
