As much as I like being on the surface of the water, I also like getting beneath it and exploring underwater sites up close. But sometimes I just don’t feel like loading up all that bulky dive gear or mustering the courage required to take the cold plunge.

Now that the Spyfish System, a submarine television vehicle (STV), is on the market, I can cross that dilemma off my list. The idea behind the 24-inch sub is that you can see what’s going on beneath the surface (to a depth of 500 feet) without ever getting wet, thanks to its two video cameras (the forward camera has pan and tilt, while the aft has a periscope), floodlights, lithium ion power pack, video link cable, and thrusters that allow it to dive, surface, and twist. You control Spyfish from the surface via a wireless remote, and the images are relayed to a monitor, allowing you to gaze in awe at aquatic life you might never have been privy to before.

Spyfish retails for approximately $16,000 and is available through its manufacturer.
