It’s not everyday that I get excited about a flashlight, but this one’s decidedly different: It doesn’t require batteries or bulbs. All you have to do to get it going is shake it.

The NightStar is a magnetic-force flashlight, and once you’ve shaken it for about 30 seconds, its LED light provides bright illumination for around 20 minutes. After that, simply give it another shake, and it’s good to go again.

Even better, NightStar doubles as a compass; when the flashlight’s horizontally suspended by a string or wire, it aligns in a north-south position, with the front of the light pointing north. It’s also shockproof and waterproof, and it floats. The NightStar retails for $31.95, comes with a five-year warranty, and is available from the manufacturer or West Marine.
