“Fifty percent of the people are honest, 25 percent are dishonest…The remaining 25 percent are as honest as the system they work under.” That’s the statement that piqued my curiosity on the cover of Gotcha, a book about international marine-insurance fraud and conspiracy. The 200-pager is a downright scandalous read and addresses important technical issues of marine insurance claims while providing a behind-the-scenes look at a number of intriguing case files.
Its author, Capt. Ed Geary, really tells it like it is as he examines fraud schemes and conspiracies by owners, policyholders, insurance brokers, and marine underwriters alike. Geary has experience as a certified fraud examiner and a marine-loss adjuster, and he is a member of the American Society of Naval Engineers and the Coast Guard, among other organizations.
The book is available at most major bookstores nationwide and online for $18.95.
