When the engine alarm goes off on the bridge, the damage may have already been done. But there is a device designed to help you prevent problems before you get a flashing red dash.
The MiniTemp MT4 is a handheld noncontact, infrared thermometer that takes real-time readings of your engine's temperature, cylinder by cylinder. The unit's laser sight helps you aim the thermometer where you want, and the temperature is displayed on an LCD screen. From a distance of two feet, the thermometer, which runs on a nine-volt battery, can reportedly take readings up to 500°F.
Raytek says the MiniTemp MT4, which retails for $99 and is available from NAPA Auto Parts stores, is especially helpful in diagnosing misfires, rough idle, and overheating.
