Centek Spill Kit By Capt. Patrick Sciacca — December 2002 |
||||||||||||||||||||
A small fuel or oil spill can cost big in both its potential effect on the environment and the cost for cleanup and fines. By keeping the proper containment gear onboard, it's possible to lessen the impact of fuel/oil spills and leaks. Centek Industries offers a cleaning system aptly called the Boater Emergency Spill Kit for about $57. It includes 20 oil-absorbent pads, a bag of treated wood chips (called viscochips), gloves, and a bag for disposal when the cleanup is complete. Each pad in the kit can hold up to two pounds of oil and reportedly still stay buoyant, so keeping a small spill contained shouldn't be a problem. The wood chips are treated with Mycelx, which causes cohesion between the oil and/or fuel and the chips. This helps keep the containment area small, allowing for neat cleanup. The Boater Emergency Spill Kit is available through Centek distributors nationwide. Centek Industries Phone: (800) 950-7653. Fax: (229) 228-1270. www.centekindustries.com. |
