Blue Goose Charters has five trawlers, from 27 to 36 feet. All are based in Baltimore Harbor, and itineraries are geared toward the northern half of the Chesapeake Bay. Expect to spend a lot of time gunkholing. “The average depth of the Chesapeake is relatively shallow, and the trawler with its draft is conducive to exploring tributaries,” says owner Bill Shermer.

Bareboat prices range from $595 for four days aboard an Albin 27 to $2,595 for a week aboard a 36-foot Nova Sundeck. Captained trawlers are offered for two- to five-day charters from $895 to $2,250.

Shermer says courses are popular: “We offer an extensive hands-on training program. People who don’t really know what they’re doing can come to us if they’re thinking about chartering or buying a trawler, and we’ll hold their hands.”
