NEW JERSEY
Stretching some 120 miles from Sandy Hook to Cape May, the Jersey Shore is home to some of the finest offshore fishing on the Atlantic seaboard, Bruce Springsteen, and the town of Long Branch's famous Windmill hot dog. It also has some of the most highly rated public courses anywhere.

• Pine Hill Golf Club Phone: (877) 450-8866, designed by Tom Fazio and built by Eric Bergstol, is the number-one public course in the state. From the back tees, this magnificent par-70 course measures 6,900 yards and is tough enough to give any player a challenging round. No two holes are alike, and each possesses dramatic changes in elevation, impressive views, and towering pine, oak, walnut, and maple trees lining the fairway. Once on the dance floor, you'll find outstanding Bentgrass possessing subtle breaks to test your putting abilities. Greens fees are $150 including range and cart.

• Near Atlantic City's Absecon Inlet is Blue Heron Pines East & West Phone: (609) 965-GOLF. The Steve Smyers-designed East Course opened for play last May to rave reviews. The 7,300-yard, links-style course offers wide fairways, generous greens, and formidable bunkers. Playing bump-and-run shots is guaranteed to be a challenge.

Stephen Kay designed the 6,810-yard West Course with Bentgrass tees and greens and rye-grass fairways. Your best chance for a birdie is on the first hole, a straightaway par four, while the 14th, a formidable 518-yard par five, and 17th, a 451-yard par four, are the toughest. Green fees are $125 including cart. A bucket of 50 range balls is $5.
