• It's been the buzz around Milford for 10 years, but the 7,209-yard, par-72 Great River Golf Club Phone: (203) 876-8051 is now ready for play. Tom Fazio designed the challenging and beautiful course. Holes six through nine are alongside the Housatonic River, and the par-three eighth measures 230 yards from the back tee. The rest of the course is just as exciting. The PGA pros who played the Saturday Series event of 2000's Greater Hartford Open requested the course be included for 2001. It has also been voted #4 Best New Upscale Public Golf Course by Golf Digest Magazine (January 2002). Green fees, including cart and use of the driving range, are $125 during the week and $150 on the weekends. While you're there try Thornwoods Restaurant, also available for corporate functions and banquets, where the food is as good as the course is challenging.
• Besides the famous university, New Haven also offers the Yale Golf Course Phone: (203) 432-0895. With its layout designed by C.B. MacDonald, the par-70 course measures 6,749 yards from the back tees. The ninth is a challenging shot over water to the green with a ravine on the other end. There are great par-three holes and plenty of blind shots for you to take a chance on. Iron shots are critical, and course management is a must. Greens fees are $110 and carts are $37.
Local marinas in the area include Milford Landing Phone: (203) 874-1610 and Milford Boat Works Phone: (203) 877-1475.
