Long known as a bastion of baked beans, Brahmin society, and the Red Sox, Massachusetts also offers quality golfing not too far from its legendary harbors.

• Plymouth's Atlantic Country Club Phone: (508) 888-6644 offers an 18-hole, 6,728-yard, par-72 course designed by Cornish, Silva, & Mungea. The par threes are long and there are no easy lies. Bring your best iron game to this course. Greens fees for Monday through Thursday are $40 and Friday through Sunday are $52. Carts are $28.

• Of course you've made your plans to visit Martha's Vineyard well in advance--a year at least--and in doing so have also scheduled your tee time at the Farm Neck Golf Club Phone: (508) 693-3057. It was the course of choice of Bill (as in Clinton) when he was visiting, and for good reason. The ocean views are nothing less than spectacular, and the Cornish & Robinson-designed course, a 6,807-yard par-72, is as challenging as it looks. Greens fees from May 11 to June 21 are $70 and $125 from June 22 to Sept 16. Carts are $26.
