WHAT
TO DO
Here are some
suggested ways to pass the time in this salty seascape:
• New
Harbor Kayak Rentals (401-466-5572) can get you out on the Salt Pond
for an adventurous morning or afternoon.
• Although
the Point Judith Lighthouse building (401-789-0444) is off-limits,
many visitors come to picnic on the grounds and to throw a line in the
surf.
• The
Narragansett Chamber of Commerce (401-783-7121) has a complete
list of all beach events, including concerts and festivals as well as
bus schedules for getting around.
• Theatre-By-The-Sea
(401-782-8587) offers some highly entertaining summer stock presentations.
• Got
time to take a busman's holiday and go fishing? Try Sportfishing
Charters (401-783-7766) for the entire Point Judith fleet. If you're
interested in getting in on some smokin'-reel competition, call
the Chamber of Commerce for information on the four sponsored tournaments,
including the area's famous shark hunt.
EATERIES
Here are some
favored dining spots in the local Point Judith area:
• The
commercial fishing boats dock daily at Champlin's (401-783-3152).
Pick up your order and grab a picnic table, or come in by dinghy, tie
up at the dock, and take it back to your boat.
• George's
of Galilee (800-399-8477) offers an award-winning stuffed quahog dish,
steamed mussels, fried calamari, and clam cakes. Try the Rhode Island
clam chowder or the snail salad. All of George's salads feature
herbs from his own garden.
• Iggy's
(401-737-9459) is famous for its Doughboys and chowders. You can enjoy
anything from a fish sandwich to a notable "Iggy Burger" to
finger foods.
• The
newly renovated Sea Gull (401-789-2864) has been a mainstay since
1942. Start with the mussels zuppa or "stuffies," the signature
chopped local quahogs mixed with herb breading and baked in the shell.
A patron favorite is the "lobsta" salad. And don't forget
to write your favorite fish story down in the log book in addition to
tacking up a fishing picture on the wall.
• The
sunsets are nothing short of spectacular from the 1,000-square-foot deck
of Finbacks (401-783-9489). Dig into the clam cakes, fish bites,
"chowdahs," and "krab kakes" if you like. Or get
a grilled-to-order steak, lobster, or pasta special dinner.
