Broadband 3G Radar
Heaping one techy-sounding buzzword on another, Simrad has just launched its Broadband 3G radar. Using the same Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) principle as the BR24 that the company launched a couple of years ago, Simrad engineers have increased the peak transmitter power of the Broadband 3G from 100 milliwatts to 165 milliwatts. Yet that’s still less than one ten-thousandth of the smallest conventional radar or one tenth of a cell phone!
Increasing the power by that much means that small targets should be detected at roughly 30 percent greater ranges than were possible with the previous model, while retaining all the advantages of the original—namely instant switch-on, easier set-up, stunning range resolution, and a minimum range of virtually zero, combined with the arguably less significant benefits of lower power consumption and negligible radiation.
And the price has come down as well. The new radar lists at $1,699 and is compatible with any of Simrad’s NSO, NSE, or NSS displays. A Lowrance-badged version is also available; it’s compatible with Lowrance HDS displays.
