Slow, Steady, Bulletproof

Kadey-Krogen designed its 52 to take you anywhere, anytime.

A The raised pilothouse features a reversed windshield and a Portuguese bridge.
B Because it’s so roomy, Kadey-Krogen calls the cockpit space underneath the extended deck her “back porch.”
C Watertight Dutch doors protect the pilothouse in heavy weather and allow access to the Portuguese bridge.
D To handle serious ground tackle, the Kadey-Krogen 52 comes standard with a 24-volt Maxwell 3500 HWC dual-chain wheel windlass.

My buddy’s family has a Kadey-Krogen 48. They switched from a popular 60-foot planing-hull cruiser because they frequent the Bahamas for months at a time and were willing to exchange speed for a boat that is in my friend’s words, “slow and bulletproof.” In addition, he says that everyone in his family was looking for additional space. Now, the new Kadey-Krogen 52 should suit his needs just as well as her sistership did.

The Kadey-Krogen 52 fills the gap between the 48 and 55, although the builder says it actually patterned this vessel after its 58. Like that boat, the 52 will feature a raised pilothouse with reverse-raked windows and a Portuguese bridge, plus an aft deck shaded by an extended bridge that holds the tender. This yacht also shares the 58’s “counter-faired keel,” which Kadey-Krogen says directs counter-rotating water to the prop, improving efficiency. Still, she’s her own boat: The company is crafting entirely new tooling for the 52.

Her pilothouse will feature a teak-andspruce sole, with twin Stidd chairs residing in front of a teak wheel. Kadey-Krogen calls the settee that’s just aft of the helm a “watch berth,” as it can convert to a double when you lower the high-low teak table.

Access is convenient throughout. An interior stairway to port leads down to the galley and saloon. Both the galley and pilothouse can be accessed from outside through weathertight Dutch doors.

Below decks, the standard plan calls for a forward master stateroom with en suite head in the bow area, a guest stateroom amidships to starboard with a private door to the second head, and an office to port. The owner has the option of converting the office space to a third guest stateroom and having a full-beam master stateroom amidships.

With her single 231-hp John Deere diesel and 1,400-gallon fuel capacity, the 52 has an anticipated maximum range of 3,300 nautical miles at a cruising speed of seven knots. Those looking for redundancy can opt for the twin 121-hp John Deere package. Kadey-Krogen is projecting an official launch in mid-2011.
