Garmin 6000 and 7000 MFDs
There are new models at the top of the Garmin series, as well, in the form of two new ranges of large-format multifunction displays known as the GPSMAP 6000 and GPSMAP 7000 series. Like the 4000 and 5000 series, they offer a choice between touchscreen control (in the 7000 series at right) and more conventional soft-key and cursor operation in the 6000s.
Both series feature dual processors that give faster and smoother panning and scrolling than their predecessors, higher-resolution screens, and increased networking capabilities through NMEA 2000, NMEA 0183 and Garmin networks, and a PC monitor video output.
The baby of the new range is the 6008. It has an 8.4-inch 640x480 (VGA) screen and softkey controls and is priced at $2,899. The 12-inch version has a 1024x768 (XGA) display and is priced at $3,899.99. There’s no 8.4-inch model in the 7000 series: the smallest display is the 12-inch XGA screen on the 7012, while the largest is the 15-inch XGA on the 7015.
Interestingly, Garmin hasn’t released a list price, perhaps suggesting that these flagship products are intended mainly for boatbuilders rather than for retro-fit. They are, however, appearing in one or two retailers, generally priced at a little under $7,000.
