One advantage of using fiber-optic cable for underwater lighting is that there is no electricity, bulbs, or even lenses in the through-hull. Hence the fitting can be smaller and maintenance is easier. Imtra’s system uses separate stainless steel illuminator boxes with metal halite bulbs and cables that fit a variety of standard Airmar through-hull fittings. A 12-volt/50-watt starter kit with a single five-foot cable and an emergency plug costs $1,470. There are also 110- and 220-volt versions with 150-watt bulbs able to feed three lights simultaneously. At the top of the line, Imtra has illuminator boxes with remotely switched white/red/yellow/green color wheels; a neat effect that would surely be impossible with self-contained fixtures.
