World’s 100 Largest Yachts 2006 #19: Asean Lady
#19: ASEAN LADY—289’0”
While Brian Chang, the head of China’s Yantai-Raffles Shipyard and Asean Lady’s owner, commissioned his yacht to withstand rough weather better than traditional motoryachts, he certainly didn’t expect to have to put her to the test the way she was in 2004. Anchored off Phuket, Thailand that December, the yacht experienced the tsunami that devastated much of the region; thankfully she emerged unscathed. If you see her on the horizon, try your best to get an all-around look at her, particularly the 138-foot-long outrigger on her starboard side. Her design is similar to that of a proa, which is a Pacific outrigger canoe.
