American Custom Yachts 90

Back in 1989, Monterey Marine, which became American Custom Yachts (ACY), launched a vessel named Renegade. At 80 feet LOA, her displacement was a mere 120,000 pounds, even with twin 7,000-hp MTU diesels that each weighed nearly seven tons. She reportedly reached a top speed of 55.9 mph (48.6 knots), and claimed the title of world’s fastest sportfisherman.

Now ACY is at it again. This time it’s planning a vessel that’s ten feet larger and will go even faster. Company founder Dominick Lacombe, who alludes to speeds in excess of 57.5 mph (50 knots), says that he’s confident that ACY will once again lay claim to having built the fastest sportfisherman ever made. A 90-footer with a relatively light 161,000-pound displacement and 9,200 hp produced by a pair of new MTU 16V 4000s is a good start.

To keep weight down, the ACY 90 will be cold molded and employ an assortment of composite coring throughout: Divinycell in the decks, Nida-Core in the deck hatches, Tri-Cell in the cabinets and nonstructural bulkheads, and vacuum-bagged marine-grade plywood over balsa core in the structural bulkheads.

In order to withstand the torque of 9,200 hp, ACY reworked its engine-mounting system. Instead of each motor sitting on a pair of stringers, the two diesels will rest on an aluminum bed that links together six stringers.

Prodigious low-end torque—her ZF marine gears have a 1.97:1 reduction ratio—coupled with a 22-foot beam that allows the engines to be far apart, should make it relatively easy to maneuver the 90 at slow speeds, which is key when fighting pelagics. “A lot of people think a boat this size is a motoryacht and not a hardcore sportfisherman,” Lacombe explains. “They’d be wrong.” A number of features back up his claim. From her Bausch American tower to her aft galley, which lets the crew make sandwiches while monitoring the action in the cockpit, ACY’s 90 might be breaking tournament records, as well.
