LE GRAND BLEU
354'3" • 2000 A
Seattle native who has business interests in a few professional sports
teams sure knows how to enjoy himself onboard this yacht. He rang in the
new year in St. Bart’s and headed to the Med this spring in time
for the Monaco Grand Prix. In fact, during the race he reportedly hosted
a party on Le Grand Bleu that was attended by Prince Albert of Monaco,
model Naomi Campbell, tennis ace Boris Becker, and racing great Emerson
Fittipaldi, among others. No doubt they all were amazed that the massive
blue-hulled yacht carries a 72-foot sailing yacht. What they may not have
known is that Le Grand Bleu is the first private yacht to receive
an Environmental Protection Notation from Lloyd’s, certifying that
she complies with stringent voluntary guidelines to control pollution.

LIMITLESS
315'7" • 1997 Another
blue-hulled beauty, Limitless is the largest yacht Victoria’s
Secret honcho Leslie Wexner has owned. She replaced a same-named 139-footer,
and boy, does the added length permit a lot of interesting features. For
one, she has an aft-deck pool in which the water can be heated and made
shallow or deep; powerful jets let guests swim against the stream for
exercise (or just fun). There’s also a fueling station for the two
31-foot custom Serenella Venetian tenders. To top it all off, Limitless
contains 15 tons of decorative marble and 15 tons of window glass. Since
security is always a concern for yachts like this, pressure-sensitive
sensors embedded in the deck set off alarms if an intruder steps onboard.

TATOOSH
301'8" • 2000 Maybe
his efforts to obtain financing for the One World Challenge team that
he’s organized for the 2003 America’s Cup has prevented him
from using his yacht as much as he’d like. Or maybe it’s the
battering his business interests in the digital wireless world have taken
in the stock market. Whatever the reason, the Pacific Northwesterner who
commissioned this yacht sold her this summer, and we hear the buyer was
none other than Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, owner of Méduse
(see no. 11). But all is not lost—he can ask his three brothers
for a ride, since each owns a megayacht. One owns Le Grand Bleu
(no. 1), another owns Katrion (no. 59), and the third owns Skye
Time, a 130-footer (no. 140). B: H.D.W. Nobis Krug, Germany;

LONE RANGER
255'0" • 1972/1994 An
Ohio resident took his Lone Ranger to St. Bart’s for the
new year’s holiday, docking alongside Le Grand Bleu and Tatoosh
(see nos. 1 and 3, respectively). She’s a converted commercial salvage
tug and an active cruiser, having globe-trotted as far as Asian waters.

KATANA
244'4" • 1991 The
$27-billion-man behind Oracle, Larry Ellison, is such a fan of Japanese
culture, he’s named his yachts (yes, yachts) using Japanese words.
This one is named for a Samurai sword. His other Japanese-themed yachts
are Izanami (see no. 16) and the maxiyacht Sayonara, which
he’s sailed to victory in several competitions, including the deadly
1998 Sydney to Hobart race. Katana, which features glossy burl
maple, ash, lacewood, and walnut inside, may soon be replaced by a larger
yacht, as persistent rumors have him building a megabeauty in Germany
in the 300-foot range. B: Blohm & Voss, Germany; N:

TERAAKA
220'0" • 1961 A
West Coast gentleman purchased the former presidential yacht of Marshall
Tito nearly two years ago. At presstime she was wrapping up a complete
refit and decor change at a yard in Baja, California. The owner plans
to have her fly the U.S. flag, something which Limitless (see no.
2) also does. B: Brodogradiliste Titovo, Yugoslavia; N: Builder;

7.
CAKEWALK
203'5" • 2000 The
intricate iron and cherry-wood spiral staircase that rises through this
yacht’s four decks took two and a half years to design and build.
The effort was worth it, for the staircase is more a piece of art than
a simple means of getting from one spot to the other. Cakewalk
also has a sophisticated entertainment system, with a central library
of 75 movies and 500 CDs. There’s also a player piano on the bridge
deck. B: Feadship/C. Van Lent en Zonen, Holland; N: H.W.

CLAIRE T
202'5" • 1973 Currently
in St. Petersburg, Claire T is for sale for $5.9 million. You may
remember this yacht standing in as Aristotle Onassis’ Christina
in last fall’s TV movie about the life of Jackie O. She accommodates
25 guests and has two master staterooms. B: Astilleros y Talleres

NUMPTIA
201'1" • 2000 Snorkeling
gear, water-skis, a scooter, and a handful of PWCs and kayaks keep the
owners and guests of this canoe-stern yacht busy when they’re not
admiring the interior handiwork of François Zuretti, who created
a virtual villa at sea. You can get in on the action, since Numptia
charters in the Caribbean and Med for $224,000 a week. B: CRN,

MYLIN IV
200'0" • 1992 Passengers
aboard any of the 16 ships in Carnival Cruise Lines’ fleet may gush
about the decor, but whatever they see can’t compare to the “star
heaven” aboard Mylin IV, owned by Mickey Arison, CEO of the
cruise company. Located above the dining table, the celestial effect is
the result of 450 tiny lights. A beautiful mural is painted behind the
marble spa tub in the owner’s bath. B: Feadship/C. Van

MÉDUSE
198'10" • 1996 Paul
Allen, the Microsoft billionaire and investor extraordinaire, entertained
Bill Gates onboard his Feadship in St. Bart’s over the new year’s
holiday. This is Allen’s second Feadship and largest new-build to
date, but she won’t be the largest for much longer, since he’s
building a behemoth of a vessel in Germany. Most reports place the length
around 400 feet. For that amount of space, he can fit in a handful of
recording studios and screening rooms instead of just one of each, as
Méduse has. And he’s sure to cover just as much territory
as he has aboard this lady. In fact, the yacht trekked about 46,000 miles
in her first year and a half on the water. B: Feadship/De
Vries Scheepsbouw, Holland; N: De Voogt International; H:
Steel; E: 2/1,700-hp Caterpillars

PARAFFIN
197'2" • 2001 A
priority for the owners of this recent delivery was that she be able to
accommodate large parties of guests, including up to 50 people enjoying
a three-hour wine-tasting menu. But where would the wine come from? The
onboard temperature-controlled “cellar” that holds more than
400 bottles—plus stowage for 450 crystal wine glasses, of course.
Because good food goes hand in hand with fine wine, there are a variety
of spots onboard where guests can dine. And if they eat too much, they
can work out in the 10-person gym and health spa on the sun deck. B:

INTUITION II
193'7" • 1974/1999 A
New Yorker had this former pilot vessel rebuilt for pleasure cruising
by a team of independent craftsmen chosen by the owner’s project
managers, as well as craftsmen from Vosper Thornycroft and Southampton
Yacht Services. He’s enjoyed trips across the Atlantic, down to
Mexico, and up to Newfoundland since delivery. B: Amels, Holland/Vosper

this yacht strictly for private cruises. B: Feadship/De Vries
