Everything's Better with Lasers

The U.S. Navy used a baseball-sized laser last week to set a small, test boat's engines on fire, in rough seas, at a distance measured in miles. The futuristic weapon could possibly be used as a deterrent for increasingly violent Somalian pirates, who are often armed with AK-47s and RPGs. The weapon can be dialed up or down in intensity from lethal levels, to merely "nuisance" levels, that would essentially warn a ship that it has been spotted and is being targeted. The laser is still in development as the Navy hasn't quite figured out exactly what to do with it yet, but if it looks anything like the picture above, it is going to be awesome.
